How To Use GulfCoat® Products

This overview is a Step by Step Guide of How to Apply the GulfCoat® Corrosion Coating Aerosol and Spray Applied products.   This overview provides a summary of the correct processes and procedures for applying the products and guidelines for selecting the correct equipment.

Step-by-Step for applying GulfCoat® Corrosion Coating Aerosol Spray

Note: Surface must be free of grease, rust, and wax

  1. Clean coils with appropriate cleaner – use GulfCoat® Metal Prep
  2. Rinse with clean water
  3. Allow coil to thoroughly dry – you may force dry using blower
  4. Mask off to protect areas from overspray
  5. Shake can until mixing ball rattles, then continue to shake for 1 minute
  6. Move can with light to medium strokes approximately 6 inches away from part
  7. Apply multiple coats to ensure full coverage as needed
  8. Let paint become tacky between coats, 30 to 60 seconds between coats
  9. After use, invert can and spray to clear valve
  10. Remove masking and allow 30 minutes before placing into service
Step-by-Step for applying GulfCoat® Corrosion Coating Spray Applied

Note: Surface must be free of grease, rust, and wax. Cover or mask off areas to protect from overspray.  

  1. Clean coils with appropriate cleaner – use GulfCoat® Metal Prep
  2. Rinse with clean water
  3. Allow coil to thoroughly dry – you may force dry using blower
  4. Mask off to protect areas from overspray
  5. Open gallon can and stir for 2 minutes ensuring that product is thoroughly mixed
  6. Pour coating into spray gun cup
  7. Close gallon can and place lid/cover onto spray gun cup
  8. Energize spray gun and adjust spray pattern and flow to achieve desire results
  9. Apply coating onto equipment to be coated using various spray patterns to ensure maximum penetration and coverage
  10. Allow 1 minute between coats to reduce the chance of drips, runs or sags in the coating
  11. Remove masking materials being careful to not damage the area just coated
  12. Wait until the coating has dried (30 – 45 minutes) before placing into service

Recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should always be worn for the work being performed.

PPE items may include the following: Respirator,  Safety Shoes, Eye & Face Protection, and Protective Clothing. 

Equipment Clean‐Up

After the spray coating has been completed, the spray equipment will need to be disassembled and cleaned. Any excess coating that was not used shall be poured back into its original container and the lid sealed. Water will be used for the spray equipment clean‐up. Disassemble the paint equipment in an effort to allow for the rinsing and cleaning of paint wetted parts. Small bottle brushes may be required to scrub and clean the affected parts. Please refer to the equipment manufactures instructions for proper disassembly and cleaning. 

Storage

If stored in the original closed container in a cool, dry place, the shelf life is 12 months.

Pot Life

This single component coating does not have a pot life as it can be reused. If you have unused coating left that has not been sprayed, it can be returned to the original container and sealed.

Equipment Guidelines for Spray Applied
  • Small applications; the size of a mini-split system can be completed using an aerosol can coating
  • Multiple units the spray applied product using a small gravity cup or battery airless spray gun. applied is more efficient.
  • Large Applications; the size of a 2-ton condenser unit. Aerosol cans can be used. More efficient to use Spray Applied   equipment, see below.
  • Larger Applications; the size is over 2-ton condenser units. Use Spray Applied equipment to include a small pressure pot system that may hold 1 to 2 gallons of product, see below.

Reminder: may require an air compressor to utilize the gravity cup spray gun or the pressure pot system. Please refer to the spray equipment to be used for air compressor SCFM or air flow required.
